Friends of Jacob Zuma
Hello good morning and welcome to Cybersurf – three minutes of life in the Cyberlane – I am your host Steven Lang.
The biggest single news event of this month – the not guilty verdict in the Jacob Zuma trial was amply celebrated on the Friends of JZ web site. You can find the site at the following address: www.friendsofjz.co.za – and the friendsofjz is one word – so it is friendsofjz.co.za some people use the American pronunciation of the last letter of the alphabet and call it friends of jay zee.
The site is technically very good – please note this is not a comment on the merits of the case.
On this programme we only discuss the web site – which I believe is rather good because it is simple, easy to use and most sections are very fast.
The site was set up by the Friends of Jacob Zuma Trust in order to gather funds to help the former deputy president pay his legal fees. At the bottom of each page is a single line that tells you which account you should use to deposit your donation.
A marquee across the top of the page also invites you to send a premium sms to a particular number which will then transfer five rand to the trust fund.
The clean and neat front page of the site carries no less than three photographs of Jacob Zuma – At the top, a banner with a somewhat thoughtful headshot of the former deputy president.
In the left panel of the front page is an abbreviated mission statement of the trust that rapidly changes, at the click of a button from English to Venda, Zulu and Setswana. On the right side is a Latest News panel offering links to a media statement by Zuma as well as statements on the verdict from the Young Communist league, Nehawu and from the tri-partite alliance.
Navigation through the site is by means of a very neat navigation bar near the top of the page. It offers you links to a page about the trust; one for contacts; another for photos of the site-hero and one for Messages of Support.
At last count – this page had almost three thousand messages – some of them very long and detailed. Most of them in English, quite a few in Zulu, some in a mixture of various languages and even some in SMS speak – only teenagers really understand that.
The most interesting section I have kept for last – it is the Documents page which has the full text of the closing arguments of the trial – a Forensic report – a Public Protector Report and Heads of Argument.
This site is an absolute must for anyone interested in a little more depth to the Jacob Zuma verdict.
The SABCnews.com site also has a special section on the ANC deputy president – and it has loads of information on the recent trial, on the Schabir Sheik trial as well as a profile of Jacob Zuma.

Ready for World Cup Soccer
Hello good morning and welcome to Cybersurf – three minutes devoted exclusively and unashamedly to the internet. I am your friendly host Steven Lang.
Just in case you didn’t know, the most exciting sporting event on this planet is little over a month away. The World Cup Soccer tournament in Germany kicks off on June 9 and already I am planning my life around match schedules.
How do you find the schedules – nothing could be easier – I typed “Germany World Cup Soccer” into the Google search field and received more than 21 million hits.
Of course most major news organizations have already set up sub-sites for the tournament – but if you want the official real McCoy - go no further than Yahoo – I think this is the first time that an online company is an official sponsor of the great sporting event. So as an official sponsor Yahoo got to design the official World Cup 2006 site which you can find at http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com
As one would expect it has all the information, schedules and team profiles you could ever want. For the hardcore fanatics it even offers a free, downloadable world cup toolbar.
This tool bar has quick links to the World Cup site and you can customize it to track any of the 32 participating teams.
Now that is really hardcore.
You should also look at the fifa site which is at fifa.com because it has a lot of interesting background information such as the latest rankings, rules and regulations. It is hard to fathom the linkage between the official yahoo site and the fifa site – but it is there somewhere.
Another worthwhile site is at http://www.wldcup.com/ - let me spell that - this is primarily a soccer news site and so it has valuable information about the form of key players – important stuff if you’re a betting woman.
Then if you are planning on watching any games at a stadium, you will need tickets and these can be purchased at http://www.euroteam.info/ .This euroteam site offers world cup soccer tickets but it also offers seats to a whole range of other events from horse racing to the Eurovision song contest.
Next we look at the ultimate world cup blog which you can find at http://www.worldcupblog.org/ - the interesting aspect of this blog is that it unifies thirty four other blogs – including one for each of the thirty two participating countries – so you have team information being constantly updated – and I won’t even mention the betting blog because right now I have to sign off.
